The boy is very drunk. The girl knows that this is the time to slip away. She checks her phone because she forgot to wear her watch. She knows this is a sign she is not thinking as she should be, but she puts her phone back in her pocket and continues on, hoping he will follow and carry her back to where he's been waiting in line for ice cream. He does.

After falling onto a couch in the apartment of a friend they only know marginally well, he rests his head on her shoulder. His hair is softer than she expected.
